J.R. Completes Chemotherapy Treatment

Today [February 16th, 2017] we are celebrating this brave guy’s final chemotherapy treatment!  J.R. is a 14-year-old Shih Tzu.  He was diagnosed with lymphoma at his primary vet at Maplewood Veterinary in Pelican Rapids, MN.  He was sent to us to discuss chemotherapy options with Dr. Tammy Ness.  There are several different options depending on the type of lymphoma the pet has.  J.R.’s family decided to go with the Wisconsin Madison Protocol, which has the highest success rate for most patients.  It is a 19 to 26-week long protocol using several different chemotherapy drugs.

Chemotherapy drugs can only be handled by properly trained professionals. We use the Pha-Seal System (pictured above) which greatly reduces handler risk of potential complications during administration.  We are fortunate to have the proper equipment, a doctor & licensed veterinary technician that have the knowledge, willingness, and training to be able to offer this life saving treatment to patients and their families without having to travel hours away.

According to Jen, Lead Licensed Veterinary Technician, “J.R. proved that age is just a number, because even though he is 14 he was not going to let this get the best of him.  He was going to keep fighting to stay with his family for as long as he could.  You could tell by his little face and his spunky personality.  I could tell as the weeks went on that he was starting to trust us and knew that we were trying to help him.”

We want to give a special thank you to Don & Jan for allowing us the opportunity to meet this special little boy & for sharing his story.  Thanks for being such great pet parents and for doing everything we recommended, even if it meant traveling through harsh weather, just so he wouldn’t miss a week of treatment.

All the best to J.R. and family.  We will miss you!
